BSI has adopted the first international standards focussed on ageing societies. These standards represent the first step towards a common approach to tackling the needs of a fast-changing demographic. Recognizing the required changes enables more possibilities for organizations and communities to benefits from the contributions of older persons in our society. Standards will also play a role in highlighting how products and services can be adapted to enable organizations to tap into new markets.
Across the world there is a shift in the demographics. The rapid increase of persons above the age of 65 expected between now and 2050 is poised to become one of the most significant social transformations of the twenty-first century, with implications for nearly all areas of society.
According to data from the future of ageing report; by 2040, nearly one in seven people in the UK is projected to be aged over 75. With this in mind there is a clear need to provide organizations and communities with the guidance to allow older persons to remain active in their local community as long as possible.
