The Kitemark for Fixed Gaseous Fire Extinguishing Systems

Anyone certified by BSI under the BAFE SP203-3 scheme will also qualify for the Kitemark for Fixed Gaseous Fire Extinguishing Systems.

This means they’ll not only be registered by BAFE as a competent provider but also be allowed to use the Kitemark — on their products and in their communications with customers.

In common with some of the other BAFE schemes, it’s split into modules:

• system design

• installation

• commissioning / handover

• maintenance.

This ensures that a company only gains registration for its particular area (s) of expertise and that when customers search the BAFE directory they’re put in touch with providers that best suit their needs.

No, ISO 9001 is not a pre-requisite for this BAFE and Kitemark scheme. However, a robust quality management system is. What this means in practice is that you’ll need to meet many of the requirements of international standards for quality management. These include (but are not limited to):

• documentation of the management structure of the organisation

• records of corrective actions where process problems have been identified

• records of the responsibilities of key personnel involved in each certified module

• suitable policies, processes, audits and records to ensure that personnel are competent for the tasks they undertake

• evidence that the management system and KPIs are regularly reviewed to ensure their continuing effectiveness.

Once we’ve completed the initial certification audit, we’ll return to your site to carry out surveillance audits and check that everything (including management system documentation) is still as it should be. These visits will take place every six months for the first two years and at least annually thereafter. The length of each visit will depend partly on how many modules you’re certified for.
