What is this report about?
The Virtual and Augmented Reality industries represent a very substantial and fast-growing opportunity. According to Goldman Sachs, AR and VR are expected to grow into a $95 billion market by 2025.
Against this backdrop, there’s currently very limited standardization activity in this area by BSI or anyone else. This led BSI to commission research to examine the market for VR/AR standards at the end of 2017.
The research consisted of desk research and in-depth, mainly, face-to-face interviews with 30 key players in the Virtual and Augmented Reality sectors. This included the design and medical sectors, content capture and production houses, standards bodies, broadcasters and video content distributors including the adult sector, VR platforms, gaming publishers and the major studios.
The report details how the VR and AR sectors have evolved to date and recommends their likely standardization needs going forward.
Who is the research report for?
- All markets that use VR/AR (primarily for consumer markets and industrial purposes)
- All relevant actors in the supply chain including:
- Consumer groups
- Retailers
- Content producers
- VR/AR educators
- Content post-production
- Device users (designers, consumers, etc)
- Retailers
- Industrial procurement
Why should you get this research?
It’s important for the development of the VR and AR sectors in the UK that BSI accurately represents their interests at the global standardization level. This report is a first step in formulating a UK approach to VR/AR standardization.
The report:
- Details the evolution of these technologies to date
- Makes projections of the likely future growth of different VR and AR markets
- Identifies key areas where respondents feel early standardization will be beneficial
- Outlines current standards-related activities, groupings and initiatives
- Summarizes the industry’s views of what BSI should do next
It specifically identifies key areas of focus for future standardization work and categorizes them as near-, mid- or long-term goals. They are:
- To establish health and safety standards and best practice – a near-term aim
- To establish content capture best practice – a near-term aim
- To develop a simplified industrywide set of terminology/specifications – a near- to mid-term aim
- To develop post-production standards – a mid- to long-term aim
- To develop the VR/AR industry talent pool – a near-term priority
