A designated standard is a standard which is recognized by the government in part or in full by including its reference on GOV.UK in a formal notice of publication. Designated standards can help manufacturers demonstrate that their products, services or processes conform with GB law. By following designated standards, manufacturers can claim a ‘presumption of conformity’.
A similar ‘presumption of conformity’ scenario is found in the European Union, where a standard cited in the Official Journal of the European Union is known as a harmonized standard. Since the UK left the EU in January 2020, the government has recognized designated standards as a route to offering a presumption of conformity with GB regulation, and the facility exists to designate British, European and international standards. This short webinar will give participants insight into how a standard is designated, and the interplay between the UK government designating, and a standard being cited in the OJEU.
