BSI extends scope of international product certification services

Press release - 19 July 2011

The British Standards Institution (BSI) has extended the scope of its product testing and certification services under the International Electrotechnical Commission for Electrical Equipment (IECEE) Certification Body (CB) Scheme.

The British Standards Institution (BSI) has extended the scope of its product testing and certification services under the International Electrotechnical Commission for Electrical Equipment (IECEE) Certification Body (CB) Scheme. This will provide manufacturers with a simplified way of obtaining multiple national certification and significantly reducing their time to market.

The extended scope means that BSI can now offer IECEE testing and certification for household appliances and hand held motor operated electric tools as well as capacitors lighting products and modules, measuring equipment, medical equipment, IT and office equipment and electronic home entertainment equipment. BSI is both a National Certification Body (NCB) and Certification Body Test Laboratory (CBTL) under the IECEE CB scheme.

The IECEE CB Scheme is based on the principle of mutual recognition by its members and allows for the acceptance of product safety test results among laboratories and certification bodies participating in the scheme. It reduces obstacles to international trade which arise from having to repeat testing of products to internationally harmonised standards to gain different national certification.

Ken Coveney, Managing Director of BSI’s Global Testing Services business said, “BSI is a provider of global testing and product certification services and recognises the need to broaden its scope of services to its customers in the area of electrical equipment to complement its existing services. By extending our IECEE testing and certification services scope we want to support international manufacturers in getting their products to as many markets as quickly as possible through the provision of this globally recognised scheme of assurance."
