BSI appoints Dr Scott Steedman as Director (Designate) of Standards

The British Standards Institution (BSI) today announced that Dr Scott Steedman CBE has been named as the Director (designate) of Standards and will start his new position from 16th January 2012.

Dr Steedman will work closely with the current Director of Standards, Mike Low until his retirement in September 2012 and will then replace Mike Low on the BSI Board. His responsibilities will include driving BSI’s Standards development strategy, engaging with business to ensure that Standards meet their needs, and strengthening relationships with the UK Government and international Standards bodies (such as ISO, CEN, IEC and CENELEC) to maintain the profile and impact of Standards.

With his background in engineering and specialist knowledge in risk and natural disasters, organisational change and innovation strategy, he brings a wealth of experience from a variety of sectors and countries.”

Prior to joining BSI, Dr Steedman had extensive experience at international enterprises such as Sir Alexander Gibb & Partners (Director of Engineering), High Point Rendel (Director of Group Strategy), and Foster Wheeler Energy (Director of Engineering Operations), and more recently with BRE Global where he was Director, Products and Services. He also helped to establish the European Council for Construction Research, Development and Innovation where he was President of this industry body for 11 years.

Dr Steedman started his career at Cambridge University, where he was a Lecturer in Engineering and Fellow of St Catharine's College. He has a PhD and MPhil from Cambridge University, a BSc from the University of Manchester UMIST.

Dr Steedman will continue as a non-executive Director at the Port of London Authority, and Editor-in-Chief of the Royal Academy of Engineering’s flagship magazine, Ingenia.
