New addition to BSI board strengthens healthcare capabilities

BSI Group, the global standards and assessment provider, announces the appointment of non-executive board member, Thomas M. Gorrie, Board Trustee to the prestigious Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and a former Johnson & Johnson Corporate Vice President. He is also a Trustee of Duke University, North Carolina, and chairs their Health System. Dr Gorrie will take up his position at BSI on 1st September 2009.

Dr Gorrie, who trained as a chemist and gained a Ph.D. from Princeton University, built an illustrious international career over 35 years with Johnson and Johnson, mainly in the medical devices industry. He had responsibility for numerous businesses, especially in the US, Canada, Latin America, Europe and China. He held several senior posts with the corporation between 1993 and 2008, latterly serving as Corporate Vice President, Government Affairs and Policy, where he was in charge of US federal and state and international government relations.

In the early 1990s Dr Gorrie was president of McNeil Specialty Products Company, a division of Johnson and Johnson, where he oversaw the successful development and launch of sucralose. Dr Gorrie has published 11 articles in scientific journals, has two product patents to his name, and has co-edited a book.

BSI has a developing portfolio of clients in the medical devices field, providing global certification of high-risk, complex products with brand leadership in cardiovascular and orthopaedic implants. It is the leading Notified Body for Medical Devices in both the US and UK. Dr Gorrie’s expertise in this field, which includes personally overseeing the inception-to-market process, is expected to make a significant contribution to BSI’s influence in this arena.
