Standard for steel, concrete and composite bridges

PRESS RELEASE

October 2006

To make sure the standard is up to date with the many technical and social developments the British Standards Institution (BSI) has published a revision to BS 5400-2:1978 Steel, concrete and composite bridges. Specification for loads.

This standard has been updated in the following areas:

  • The UK wind map
  • The effect of terrain roughness on the properties of the wind
  • The effect of fetch of particular terrains on the properties of the wind
  • The effects of topography on the properties of the wind
  • The treatment of pressure coefficients (drag and lift)
  • The treatment of relieving areas
  • Highway/railway bridge loading
  • Clauses on thermal actions.

NEW EDITION - BS 5400-2:2006 Steel, concrete and composite bridges. Specification for loads

BS 5400-2:2006 supersedes BS 5400-2:1978 which is now withdrawn.

However this new edition does not reflect a full review or revision of the standard. Its primary purpose is to keep it in line with revisions to other related standards and the Highways Agency standard BD 37/01, pending the introduction of the structural Eurocodes.

What are Eurocodes?

Eurocodes are a set of 58 standards divided in to 10 parts.
Each one will have a companion National Annex, developed nationally, to facilitate application in each Member State. They will replace existing standards, such as the British Standard Codes of Practice by 2010. They are applicable to buildings and bridges, as well as other significant engineering works, for example silos and tanks, pipelines, towers and masts, and liquid retaining structures.

There are material parts for Concrete, Steel, Composite, Timber, Masonry, Aluminium. And there are the horizontal requirements: Basis of design, Loadings, Seismic, and Geotechnical requirements.

Why are Eurocodes important?

Eurocodes are a harmonised set of structural design codes for Europe.

  • They will replace existing national codes and offer a means of compliance with UK Building Regulations
  • Designs for Public Works using Eurocodes must be accepted by governments across the EU under the European Public Procurement Directive
  • Countries outside Europe, in the Middle and Far East, are looking at adopting Eurocodes
  • They will open global markets for structural design.
