Latest machinery guide course book for students is about to be published

The British Standards Institution (BSI) is about to publish PP 7722:2006 Designing safe machinery: Guidance for higher education to the standards and regulations. 

PP 7722:2006 includes a book and CD with material relevant for higher education engineering students on current standards, regulations, and guidance for producing a comprehensive risk assessment for a machine and has been structured to be delivered as a course.

If the course is delivered in its entirety, students will have a thorough understanding of all the hazards associated with machinery, and the principles of machinery risk assessment.  They will gain practical experience of designing machine guards, selecting interlocking devices, designing access steps and ladders and of producing the documentation necessary to comply with the EC Machinery Directive.

Course aims:

  • a working knowledge of the Machinery Directive 98/37/EC enacted in the UK as the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 1992
  • an understanding of the process of machinery risk assessment
  • familiarity with the key standards in the Safety of Machinery series
  • a thorough understanding of the range of hazards posed by machines
  • the ability to design a set of guards for a machine
  • the ability to design a set of access steps for a machine
  • the ability to complete a comprehensive risk assessment for a machine
  • the ability to compile a technical file for a machine
  • the ability to design safe machinery.

The CD contains over 360 PowerPoint slides, questions and answers, assignments and the texts of the 12 core European Standards.  The book is in 17 sections with notes for lecturers, activities and sample risk assessments.

PD 5304:2005 Guidance on safe use of machinery
PD 5304:2005 covers the safe use of machinery and provides comprehensive guidance on practical measures and techniques that may be applied to machinery so as to safeguard operators, maintenance personnel and others.

The guidelines deal with issues ranging from selection of protective measures and safeguards through to practical examples of guard design and their application. It provides advice on the safeguarding and use of machinery prior to the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 1992 (normally machines supplied before 1995) as well as guidance for users of machinery designed to and manufactured in accordance with harmonized European machinery safety standards.

PD 5304:2005 supersedes PD 5304:2000, which is withdrawn.
