PRESS RELEASE

Monday, 23rd October 2006

2006 marks the 10th anniversary of ISO 14001, the international standard for Environmental Management Systems (EMS).

To mark this significant milestone an awards evening to celebrate the successful implementation of ISO 14001 has been organized on 28 November by the British Standards Institution (BSI), with the support of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), the Environment Agency and the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA).

A company's environmental performance can have a significant impact on its success and the awards evening will include some beacon case studies of organizations which have reaped the rewards of implementing ISO 14001. The evening will culminate in an awards ceremony for the best organizations in the categories of: Best SME, Best large company, Most innovative organization and Best public sector organization.

The awards will provide an opportunity for organisations to explore the benefits of implementing ISO 14001 with a showcase of the success of those who have used the ISO 14001 standard to make progress on sustainability, improve their overall performance and contribute to the policy objectives set out in the Government’s Sustainable Development Strategy 'Securing the Future'.

It is hoped that companies who have benefited from using ISO 14001 over the last 10 years will encourage organisations who have not yet adopted this standard to consider the environmental and business benefits of implementing ISO 14001.
