Harnessing technology: BSI welcomes new e-strategy

PRESS RELEASE

13 April 2005

BSI (British Standards Institution) has welcomed the Department for Education and Skills’ (DfES) new e-Learning strategy as a positive step towards helping students achieve their potential using the latest available resources.

The strategy sets out the need for common technical standards to ensure all products and services are commissioned and developed to agreed specifications. It names BSI as a Technical Infrastructure Key Partner to assist the DfES with realising this objective.

As the UK’s national and the world’s first standards-making body, BSI is well placed to deliver. In addition to having already published a number of British Standards in this area BSI is also a leading participant in international work in ISO (International Organization for Standardization) and CEN (European Committee for Standardization) developing e-Learning standards.

'Harnessing Technology: Transforming Learning and Children's Services', outlines the use of digital and interactive technologies to achieve a more personalised approach within all areas of education and children's services. According to the strategy, by using a more strategic approach the aim in five years time is to ‘build the common ground that brings all our education and children’s services to the critical baseline of being able to use the technology well’.

David Keech, BSI British Standards e-Learning committee manager said, “BSI is excited about the opportunity to work with the DfES and its partners to deliver on this strategy and make it a success. We are waiting to receive further guidance on our involvement, and are keen to get started on making digital and interactive technologies more accessible to learners.”
