PRESS RELEASE

16 March 2004

New smoke and heat tunnel facility for commercial smoke and heat sensors

The Product Services division of BSI Group (BSI) has installed a new smoke and heat tunnel at its Hemel Hempstead facility to substantially increase its capabilities for testing and Kitemark certification services. The new tunnel will provide manufacturers with facilities to undertake research and product development testing.

The smoke and heat tunnel will primarily be utilised for commercial smoke and heat sensors to BS EN 54 Part 7, and BS EN 54 Part 5 respectively.

Richard Dobson, head of BSI Product Certification, says, "The addition of the smoke and heat tunnel to our established detector testing capabilities represents a significant investment and commitment to the fire industry. As well as building on our experience and enhancing our certification service offering, BSI increases the choice of testing facilities available to manufacturers. The procurement and installation of the smoke tunnel will enable BSI to improve response and delivery times for clients. Moving forward future developments at BSI will include testing and certification services for sounders and manual call points to BS EN 54 Part 3 and BS EN 54 Part 11 respectively."

The BSI Kitemark has been associated with fire products for over 25 years. During this time BSI has continually made significant investment in state-of-the-art test equipment to enhance and support Kitemark certification schemes.

The Kitemark has been established as the leading certification mark in the UK for over 100 years and provides specifiers and consumers alike with confidence in the quality of the product and reassurance that it is fit for the purpose for which it is intended. The Kitemark is the most recognised sign of quality and safety.

BSI Product Services has been instrumental in helping industry to develop new and better products that meet both customer and legislative requirements. Through working closely with its customers, it delivers practical and economic advantages, which benefit both product development and the end user.

This investment builds on BS’s already vast fire industry experience and is the latest test facility to support Kitemark schemes for fire safety products. BSI Products Services has ‘Notified Body’ status for 18 European Directives including the Construction Products Directive (CPD), Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) and the Marine Equipment Directive (MED).
