Emtel Limited achieves ISO 9001 certification

Press release: 3 February 2004

Emtel Limited, a leading telecommunications company in the Republic of Mauritius, achieved ISO 9001 certification for quality management systems. Emtel is the first company to obtain an ISO registration from BSI Group (British Standards Institution) in Mauritius.

The Hon. Mr. Pradeep Jeeha, minister of information technology and telecommunications, who attended the event as the guest of honour said: "I would like to see all other operators in telecommunications as well as the information and communication technologies sectors become certified in the near future. The client is not King anymore, but Emperor. While Emtel amply deserves such recognition from BSI, it should not stop with ISO 9001 certification but strive for more innovation."

Emtel is a pioneer of mobile cellular telephony not only for Mauritius but the whole Southern Hemisphere. To help sustain this position, this prestigious award demonstrates Emtel's commitment to continually improving the way it manages customer and supplier relationships. The work behind this will also help drive Emtel ahead of competition in terms of effective customer services.

Fanie Jordaan, senior client manager and the lead assessor for BSI in the European, Middle-Eastern and African region, conducted the formal presentation of the certificate and the renowned BSI flag. Fanie said: "Because mobile telecommunications technology develops extremely quickly, it is imperative that products and services have the necessary speed to market. ISO 9001:2000 will help Emtel achieve this. It provides confidence between companies and their customers both domestically and internationally. It helps enable and facilitate trade, improve competitiveness, promote training and skills and ensure quality products and services."

Hoolass Lochee of Emtel Ltd, said: "Today Emtel has set an important benchmark in Mauritius and the Indian Ocean islands as the first telecommunications company to successfully obtain certification with BSI and, indeed, surpass the high level requirements of ISO 9001:2000.

"Emtel strongly believes that its achievement will benefit its customers and the country in general, as one of our core values is to participate in the socio-economic development of Mauritius. Emtel has trained its entire staff towards the practice of quality and has over 30 ISO internal auditors to self- monitor its quality level.
